Final Fantasy Creator Hironobu Sakaguchi Says to Expect New Title in 2017

Final Fantasy is one of the most iconic and celebrated video game series in history, so when Hironobu Sakaguchi, the father of Final Fantasy, announces that he’s working on a new title, it’s time to get excited. Sakaguchi parted ways with Square (Now known as Square Enix after a merger back in 2003) in the early 2000s and went on to found the game development company Mistwalker with the financial backing of Microsft Game Studios. This departure means that there’s no way we should expect a new Final Fantasy title, but Sakaguchi’s recent track record leaves plenty to be psyched about.

Mistwalker, under Hironobu Sakaguchi’s leadership, developed such classics as Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and The Last Story,  all very successful and well-loved RPGs in their own right. The development studio’s most recent offering is Terra Battle, a tactical tile-based role playing game for iOS and Android.

Terra Battle’s launch was slightly unique, as Sakaguchi took a Kickstarter-esque approach – adding goals and milestones at certain download numbers in order to encourage players to download the game and keep playing. Many of the goals were music-related, with compositions from the famed Nobuo Uematsu, Kenji Ito, and Yoko Shimomura adding to the soundtrack as the game continued to reach milestones. The ultimate milestone for the launch was the release of Terra Battle on consoles, so there’s a possibility that that’s the title we can expect. Mistwalker has been working on the title since 2014, but the development is not a simple port and has taken longer than expected.

In a press release in February of 2016, Silicon studios announced a collaboration with Mistwalker. There’s not much known about that title, and it’s even possible that the console Terra Battle development and the Silicon Studio collaboration are one and the same.  All we really know about the collaboration is that it exists, and we were given a quick glimpse of the concept with the art from the press release (pictured below).

All in all, we don’t know much about what’s to come, but one thing is certain: with Hironobu Sakaguchi behind the project, it’s likely to be a huge hit with the fans. Those itching for a taste of Mistwalker’s offerings can download Terra Battle on iOS and Android or check out Lost Odyssey (Free with Xbox Live for Xbox One this month!)
