Warner Bros. previewed the Mortal Kombat X mobile game in a recent ‘Kombat Kast‘ on their Twitch live stream. The app was released for iOS today, with an Android version coming soon. The game is a fusion of card collecting and team battling through a series of touchscreen controls. Players can unlock and level up their characters by fighting through a series of towers. NetherRealm wants the mobile game to be accessible without sacrificing any of the polish that the console release offers. As such, fan-favorite Fatalities and X-Rays from the console version are executable in this scaled-down fighter. You can watch the launch trailer for the mobile game below:
The real selling point for the mobile game is the ability to unlock various assets for the full console release. By linking a WBID account, players can access skins for use on the full console release. According to the iTunes page, players can “unlock exclusive rewards for the console version of Mortal Kombat X, including ultra rare characters like Klassic Kitana and Injustice Scorpion.”
During the ‘Kombat Kast’ 8 live stream, NetherRealm’s Ray McCaffrey and Erin Piepergerdes detailed some of the features of Mortal Kombat X mobile. Similar to the Injustice app, “if you played on the mobile version, you can actually unlock content on the console version and vice versa. So there were some rewards for playing both versions of the game.” They went on to show two unlockable skins from the mobile version – Ninja Mime Johnny Cage (a reference to MK9) and Farmer Jax (though I think LumberJax would have been a more appropriate name).
To unlock these skins, you have to head over to the WBPlay website and register on both the mobile game and the console game.
Mortal Kombat X releases on April 14 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
