The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s Download Size is Predictably Immense

CD Projekt Red’s currently in-development open world magnum opus, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is going to be an absolutely immense game. Just how big are we talking? Gaming news site, Paradiger recently looked up the game’s download size on a Dutch PlayStation Network account, only to find that it requires a minimum download size of 50GB. It would appear that all those sex scenes take up a lot of space.

Everything we’ve heard and seen of The Witcher 3 indicates it’s an incredibly ambitious project, quite possibly the most ambitious of the generation so far. The 50GB download size puts it in the upper tier of videogame file sizes. It comes in considerably larger than the game it’s most often compared to, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which clocks in at a mere 4GB on PC. It’s nearly three times as large the previous Witcher game, Assassin’s of Kings. No details on the game’s download size for PC and Xbox One have been revealed.

That said, it sounds like developer CD Projekt Red are taking care to ensure that all that extra space is put to good use, and to make sure there’s a ton of  fun content in the game for players. Co-founder, Marcin Iwinski insists that what’s included isn’t filler, and gamers won’t be sent on boring fetch quests. In an interview with IGN in Jan. 2014, he  made sure to point this out.

In The Witcher 3 you won’t have generic Fed Ex-like quests where you have to go here, fetch something, and then deliver it to someone else. Of course, you will have orders or side-quests to kill beasts, but we’re trying to put a unique spin on every single quest.

Later in the interview, Iwinski detailed just how long he estimated it would take the average player to get through all the content their packing on the disc.

We’re looking at roughly 50 hours for the main storyline depending on your gameplay style and the difficulty level. If you do most or all of the side quests, you’re looking at anything between 100 to 120 hours of gameplay.

Based on the acclaimed fantasy novels by Polish author  Andrzej Sapkowski, and powered by CD Projekt’s own proprietary REDengine 3, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt promises to take gamers on a sweeping adventure across the Northern Kingdoms. You’ll get to play not only as Geralt of Rivia, you’ll also get to control  Geralt’s protege, the young sorceress Ciri. Along the way you’ll meet up with returning faces from earlier games. Geralt’s teacher and lover, the sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg, as well as the lovely Triss, also a sorceress… and also Geralt’s lover, will make a return. You’ll even get to go on a few quests with the legendary Vesemir, the oldest living Witcher and total badass.

CD Projekt Red have pledged to support The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with an extensive post-release campaign, totaling 16 pieces of free DLC, more on that here. The game is scheduled for release on May. 19, having been delayed twice already. CD Projekt Red have promised to use the extra time afforded them to squash bugs, fine tune gameplay, and add a final layer of polish.
