Between Shu Ferns is a promotional video ad series for the PlayStation Experience. Between Shu Ferns features a mysterious host who interview some key PlayStation community members such as Tim Schafer, Gio Corsi and Adam Boyes. The video series is a riff off of Between Two Ferns a sketch series where Zach Galifianakis interviews various famous public figures, including President Barack Obama. Both characters in Between Shu Ferns and Two Ferns sit opposite each other at 45 degrees from the camera and have a table separating them with a red button. The red button is most likely the one from the Staples commercials and is used by Galifianakis for playing songs. Both videos feature deadpan humor, with the interviewer mispronouncing the interviewees names and text titles misrepresenting them. A nice touch is that the mics are very obviously taped by scotch tape to their shirts and the Between Shu Ferns interviewer is very much modeled after Galifianakis.
Shuhei Yoshida is featured in both the title of the video series and by a picture of himself being prominently displayed in the ferns. Yoshida is the President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios and a prominent figure on Twitter, @yosp. He frequently responds to both fans and developers alike on Twitter, answering questions and changing his background and Twitter icon whenever someone makes new fanart of himself. He has been with Sony for over 28 years, joining the company in 1986.
Between Shu Ferns is a lead in to the PlayStation Experience, a convention built for fans featuring keynotes, panels, contests, signings, giveaways, merchandise and memorabilia. LoadTheGame will be at the PlayStation Experience, conducting interviews with developers big and small and also taking pictures for those of you who could not make it out to Vegas. The PlayStation Experience will take place on December 6 and 7, and you can find Between Shu Ferns on YouTube.
