OnePlus loses partnership with Cyanogen in India, OS rights given to Micromax

The OnePlus – Cyanogen partnership is no longer going very well it seems as the latter recently ceased collaboration with the former in India. As you may or may not know, the OnePlus One flagship smartphone will be coming to India in just a matter of days. This marks the first time when the company expands locally to a foreign market outside its home country of China. In addition, the OnePlus One was made available to purchase without an invite as part of Black Friday and the company sold a truck load of devices thanks to this deal. However, life is full of ups and downs and OnePlus received a piece of very bad news shortly after it was looking like everything was going fine.

You might be aware by now that the company’s smartphone runs on a custom version of Android dubbed CyanogenMod. OnePlus was believed to have a solid partnership with Cyanogen, which allowed them to use the operating system without any problems until now. However, Cyanogen recently offered exclusive rights to the OS in India to a local manufacturer that goes by the name of Micromax. This means that the OnePlus One will not be able to run on the CyanogenMod operating system in the country, which is a bummer for both OnePlus and the users who were planning to buy the phone. The strangest part here is that Cyanogen went behind their back and only announced their decision at the last moment, which needless to say was a shock to OnePlus.

In a recent blog post, the company expressed their disappointment and apologized to Indian customers for no longer being able to fulfill their commitment. OnePlus goes on to say that they will still continue their collaboration with Cyanogen in order to support users from the rest of the world. But what about India? Well, the company revealed that they will be releasing their own operating system from their Android team soon to customers in the country. OnePlus predicts that the first community build of the software should arrive sometime next month, with a production-ready build scheduled for February.
