Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is nearing its December release date on the Wii U. Ahead of the game’s release, Nintendo has released a TV spot for the upcoming puzzle game. You can see the commercial below.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a spin-off title featuring the cute little Toad in his first starring role. The game is based off of the Adventures of Captain Toad mini game featured in Super Mario 3D World. The game follows the same gameplay model, giving players control of Captain Toad, and sometimes Toadette, as he traverses the level to reach the gold star at the end. The character made his first appearance in Super Mario Galaxy.
Players are able to manipulate the game’s camera to view the level, and can use the Wii U GamePad to manipulate platforms, and the pads’ gyro controls to peek around. Captain Toad is capable of taking two hits before he dies, but can collect mushrooms to gain his health back. Toad is still unable to jump, but he is able to walk and run. He also has the ability to pluck up plants, which can reveal hidden coins and turnips to throw at enemies. Captain Toad is also able to pick up a pickaxe that allows him to clear enemies and destroy obstacle blocks.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker was originally designed to feature a different Nintendo star: Link from the Legend of Zelda series. When the game was first pitched, the development team had the game star Link, which was denied. The team was able to implement the demo into Super Mario 3D World as a mini game, now starring Captain Toad. After 3D World, the team was approached and asked to take the mini game and turn it into a full title.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker releases on the Wii U on December 5th. Europe will receive the game in January. The game will have some amiibo support, though Nintendo has not given specifics on what the figures will do in the game.
