From now on, all licensed Playstation developers will have access to Unity for free. According to the game creation tool developers, their collaboration began in March 2013 and resulted in Unity for Playstation tools that allow developers to create games for Sony’s console. In addition to the free version, Unity also offers a Pro edition, which is available to developers for a fee. The difference between the two versions is that only the Pro version can be used to make commercial games.
Unity is now extending their partnership with Sony and promise a deeper collaboration and support for features and optimizations for Playstation developers. According to Unity representatives, the development tools are available to anyone who is approved by Sony as a PS developer. Unity takes this opportunity to praise Sony for “welcoming developers, no matter their size and pedigree”. Come to think of it, Sony has a really neat strategy. While Microsoft is busy making Xbox One an entertainment console, offering all kinds of apps and services, Sony focuses on games. There are a lot of indie developers with great projects who just need some support in order to finish their games. Many of these developers might come up with the next big thing and that would only be good news for Sony. So, as far as I’m concerned, the Japanese company is doing the right thing focusing their gaming console on… games.
For those who don’t know, Unity is a cross-platform game development system. It includes a game engine and integrated development environment. First announced for Mac OS in 2005, it has now extended its target to more that fifteen platforms. These platforms include BlackBerry 10, Windows Phone 8, Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, iOS, Adobe Flash, PS3, PS4, Playstation Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U and Wii. Notably, Unity is the main software development kit for Wii U and Nintendo includes a free copy with each developer license for the console.
