Meizu MX4 vs. Galaxy S5: beauty or the beast?

Since the Meizu MX4 has come out, people have been wondering whether it is more worth its money than the Galaxy S5 is. Not that either phones are beauties or beasts for that matter, but if we take things out of context, Samsung is a more trustworthy company that many more people know about compared to Meizu.

Nonetheless, a comparison between Samsung’s Galaxy S5 and Meizu MX4 is inevitable, since the MX4 has stirred up interest because of its low price and excellent specs. Seeing that they can get such a popular flagship for under $500, people must be wondering whether it would be more worth it than to purchase the  S5 for $600. Prices vary, of course, and you might come across a $320 Meizu MX4 or a $500 S5, depending on when and where you look. Nonetheless, being informed about all the options you’ve got out there is always better than just buying on impulse.

Let’s get right to it and compare the two flagships’ size, weight and design first. The Meizu MX4 measures 144 x 75.2 x 8.9 mm whilst the Galaxy S5 measures 142 x 72.5 x 8.1 mm, making the S5 the smaller and thinner flagship of the two. The MX4 weighs 147 g, whilst the S5 is just two grams lighter at 145. Size doesn’t always matter, but if you don’t like big phones clogging your pockets or if you have small hands, you might lean towards the S5.

Design-wise, the S5 has been criticized before because of its plastic, punctured chassis with removable backplate. The phone kind of feels hollow in your hands and the whole premium look and feel is compromised by the plastic Samsung has used in the S5’s design. The MX4 on the other hand has a metal chassis which feels solid even though it also has a removable backplate. Both flagships have removable batteries, yet only the Galaxy S5 sports a microSD card slot, which gives it an advantage compared to the MX4. The S5 has a 2800 mAH battery, which is small compared to the MX4’s 3100 mAH battery, which will probably have a longer endurance time.

The screen of the Meizu MX4 is a 5.36 inch IPS LCD Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protected display with a 1152*1920 resolution and 418 ppi. The Galaxy S5 on the other hand sports a beautiful Super AMOLED 5.1 inch 1080*1920 resolution display with 432 ppi, also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass3 with TouchWiz UI. The MX4 screen is not bad at all, but the Super AMOLED display on the S5 does offer clearer and sharper image quality, so the S5 wins this round.

Now, the specs. The Galaxy S5 runs on a Snapdragon 801 CPU clocked at 2.5 GHz with Adreno 330 GPU, the same as the Xiaomi Mi4. The MX4 from Meizu on the other hand, is superior in performance with a MediaTek MT6595 CPU with Quad-core 2.2 GHz Cortex-A17 & quad-core 1.7 GHz Cortex-A7 and PowerVR H6200MP4 GPU. I think its clear who the winner is when it comes to graphics card and processor performance.

The S5 sports a 16 MP rear camera with tons of features built in, including a pretty cool auto-focus capability, but the MX4 still wins with its Sony 20.7 MP rear shooter. It doesn’t have as many features, but it’s not lacking a lot of them, either. The secondary cameras on both devices are 2 MP shooters with similar features. Even though the MX4 has a better MP count, we don’t know whether image quality is as good as on the S5, but considering that it’s a Sony branded shooter, it might be better. The same camera is featured by Sony’s Xperia Z3, too, and that device is rumored to take awesome pictures. We’ll wait for a definitive conclusion on camera performance until after the MX4 starts shipping to customers on September 20.

The Galaxy S5 runs Android 4.4 Kitkat, the same as MX4, except the MX4 has its own Flyme OS 4.0 pre-loaded on the device. When it comes to connectivity, the Galaxy S5 has LTE Cat 6 support and overall better compatibility with U.S. bands and networks, so the MX4 has some ground to make up here.

Ultimately, what differentiates these two flagships greatly are their features. Whilst there aren’t many extraordinary features to mention about the MX4, the Galaxy S5 is IP67 certified, packs a fingerprint sensor, ultra power-saving mode and wireless charging, among others. In the features and extras field, the S5 is more endowed than the MX4 is, so this round goes to Samsung’s flagship.

In conclusion, after a basic comparison of the specs and features of the two flagships, I must say that this time, it comes down to your own preferences. The Galaxy S5 is a feature-packed flagship with modern sensors and water resistance and a beautiful display, whilst the Meizu MX4 is a powerful flagship with a strong build and quality camera. It’s up to you which device is best fit for your needs. I’ve said this before, but just for the sake of it, I’ll say it again. I don’t like the design of the S5 at all, so the MX4 would be my choice, especially since I consider myself a power user.
