As the business world reads through the latest flood of earnings reports, trying to make sense of the data and paint a clearer picture, one piece of news is sure to spark a lot of pointless arguments on social media: Sony shipped 4.5 million PS5s last quarter, just barely missing its own revised goal. That’s about five times as many as Microsoft was able to ship with all of its Xbox Series X and S consoles put together.
Daniel Ahmad, the director of research and insights at Niko Partners and who goes by the handle ZhugeEX on Twitter, shared the news. Ahmad took a deep breath and said, “This is a bonus one for the console warriors, and my rent is due.” He knew exactly what kind of hornet’s nest he was kicking.
We wrote about Take-Two’s sales data in February, which showed that Sony was selling twice as many consoles as Microsoft. It’s pretty amazing to see how far ahead of the competition the PS5 has become in this generation. With the rumored PS5 Pro coming out soon, we’re probably not even halfway through. It remains to be seen what the final butcher’s bill will be.
5. The PlayStation 5 shipped 4.5 million units in the last quarter. According to our estimates, this is almost 5x more than the Xbox Series X|S shipped in the same period.

When did you think Microsoft’s console sales would drop so sharply? We knew Sony was getting ahead. Was this always going to happen, or have Microsoft’s mistakes already caused real damage? Leave a comment below and let us know.
