There are Slack chat records of me saying that Helldivers 2 would not sell at all. This author needs to own up to what he said. It turns out that the game has become Sony’s fastest-selling first-party game of all time, selling 12 million copies across PS5 and PC in just 12 weeks (as of May 5th). The old record was 11 million units in 10 weeks, but that beats it.
The company said that the latest Arrowhead game “far exceeded expectations.” There was some controversy about the release earlier this month because PC users had to log in to PSN, but the company eventually changed its mind, which calmed many of the game’s angry fans. It makes sense that if the live service keeps going, this will become one of PlayStation’s most popular games ever.
There will be questions, though, about what this means for its future plans: Helldivers 2 came out on PC at the same time as the PS5, and it was a huge hit on sites like Steam. Does this make Sony more likely to release its own games on platforms other than the PlayStation? Or will the company stick to its original plan of late ports for everything that isn’t a live service?
