According to IGN, Platinum Games (The developers of Bayonetta, Wonderful 101, and Metal Gear Rising) are going to be announcing an entirely new title this E3. When it was mentioned that the studio was going to make an appearance, it was the assumption of most that it would be more information on Scalebound, the Xbox game that was briefly shown off last year. From this IGN source, however, we now know that it’s going to be a previously unannounced game. While this could be a new IP, I wouldn’t count on it – trying to market for both Scalebound and a different totally new IP would be a big risk. In my opinion, it’s more likely that we could see a new entry in the Bayonetta series.
Bayonetta was a huge success – a cult hit on all accounts – and its sequel solidified that success better than anybody could have anticipated. Not only did Bayonetta 2 live up to the legacy of Bayonetta, but it ended up being a relatively strong commercial success, weakened only by the fact that it was exclusive to Wii U. A new Bayonetta title is by no means out of the question, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that ends up being Platinum’s big announcement. With Bayonetta’s success as a franchise (many would consider Bayonetta 2 one of a handful of must-own titles for the Wii U) it would certainly be a strong thing to have going for the company.
The announcement is going to be made at 6pm EST on June 16th, on IGN’s live E3 show in-between press conferences. That, if nothing else, is a big hole in the Bayonetta theory. With Nintendo listed as publishers, it would be natural to assume that any Bayonetta-related announcements are going to be made during the Nintendo press conference, which takes place 6 hours earlier. With that in mind, I think it’s anybody’s guess what Platinum could pull out of their sleeves. As much as I think it’s unlikely, I would love having another IP being shown off – and another Metal Gear Rising or Wonderful 101 title would be complained about by absolutely no one. Whatever it is, you can see the live announcement during the E3 stream on June 16.
