Today’s Greenlight standout was Red Awakening. a multiplayer action/stealth game in an 80’s style, neon-drenched environment. Red Awakening features stealth gameplay, a movement system that includes parkour, and a creepy synth soundtrack, which couple to create a tense and unsettling experience. The focus of the gameplay is on stealth, which is brought on by the uncertainty of your environment.
Red Awakening takes place in the United States in the period after the Vietnam War. The youth of America are revolting, and fearing a civil war, the CIA fund a program by the name of Red Awakening as an attempt to cull the revolution brewing among the citizens of America. The most violent offenders are captured and sent to a secret training facility where they are conditioned to become trained, dangerous assassins. They are then placed into groups based on their countries of origin and pitted against each other in an attempt to create trained operatives who can strike against the enemies of America. The story of Red Awakening sounds very interesting and provides solid reasoning as to why teams are battling each other, which is not something that many multiplayer games attempt to explain.
Red Awakening is said to feature up to fifteen maps upon release, each of which will be based on an 80’s horror movie. An example given is a Siberian research station in the style of The Thing. Each map will also feature a customized sound set which will match the atmosphere and give each map a unique feel. I think that the idea of adding sounds and music that are unique to each level is a really interesting concept, and I can really see it making each level stand out in its own way. From the interesting level design ideas, to the refreshing story in a multiplayer setting, I can honestly say that I am looking forward to seeing where Red Awakening goes as development continues.
