Sony Xperia Z3 Android Lollipop update receives certification

The Xperia Z3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update has just been certified by the Wi-Fi alliance, which means the rollout of the update isn’t far ahead. Xperia Z3 owners were hoping that Sony would send out Android 5.1 Lollipop instead of 5.0, but it seems the company is working on 5.0 and is intending to send the update out this month. Our guess would be that by the end of next week, Xperia Z3 units should start receiving the update in regions around the world.

The Xperia Blog picked up the Wi-Fi Alliance certification earlier today and we’re glad they did because we hadn’t heard about the state of Android 5.0 Lollipop for Xperia devices in quite a while. The Xperia Z3 is the last flagship from Sony, alongside the Xperia Z3 Compact and Tablet. The Xperia Z4 should be in the works and might show up at the MWC, but our sources say Sony might be shifting to the one-year release cycle for their smartphone branch. That means that it is unlikely that the Xperia Z3’s successor would show up at the Mobile World Congress, although we won’t give up hope just yet.

Judging by the timeline seen with other OEMs, we suppose that in two weeks from today, the Xperia Z3 should start receiving the Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA update. There’s no word on when other Xperia phones like the Xperia Z2 or Z will receive the Lollipop treatment, but they shouldn’t be too far behind the flagship of 2014. With Android 5.0 Lollipop, Xperia Z3 owners are hoping to bypass the overheating problems their phone experiences on a daily basis if 4K recording is in use. At the same time, the update should fix minor bugs and issues of Xperia Z3 owners as well as bring forth the Material Design interface everybody has been excited about in the past few months. It’s a shame that Sony is so late to the game, as many were hoping that their flagships would get the update in January. Alas, it seems that by the end of the month, the Xperia Z3 should be updated to Lollipop. We will keep you posted with information about the Xperia Z3 and the entire Xperia line update schedule as we learn more in the coming days and weeks.

My life-long dream has been to test out every gadget on the market! Considering the fact that I've rapidly destroyed almost every gadget I've had so far, I'm not inclined to owning something, so my ideal outcome would be to have a different gadget each month. I'm really into smartphones, wearables and tablets and I love Playstation and Xbox, I'm sure I'll beat you at your own game (after a month of training... or two)
