So, remember RISK? Ubisoft just announced that there’s not only a console version of RISK for next and previous generation Xbox and Playstation consoles, but that it’s available now. This version of RISK is a product of the Hasbro Game Channel, which was announced by Ubisoft last year. It’s a platform specific for Hasbro-brand games, on which players can play in a family-friendly environment where they can send messages, use social media, do special missions to gain in-game currency and even make use of motion controls for specific, nondescript functions. RISK was one of the first titles announced for the platform, next to Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit.
This version of RISK isn’t the same as its board game cousin. While most of the rules are still intact, RISK eschews the expected board game setup, and is played entirely in 3D environments, where you and up to three friends can control the action from your own general’s virtual ivory tower. You can not only take over the world continent by continent, but can go after smaller objectives (such as enemy cities), or complete special objectives, or “Secret Missions”. If you’re stuck, you can consult Iris (Integrated Reconnaissance and Intelligence System), the game’s AI, which can give you tutorials or even tell you what’s going on in the game world around you. If you’re down for a little bit of a heavier challenge, you can play online and access one of the game’s four “Strategy warfare leagues”. For extra flavor, you can configure win conditions for different types of games, and the rule variants from RISK Legacy make a return.
RISK is currently available on PS4 and Xbox One for 14.99. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will be released in early 2015. If you want to see the game in action, feel free to watch the trailer at the bottom of the page.
