The Xperia Z2 is last year’s flagship form Sony and thankfully the company confirmed when Android 5.0 Lollipop was released that all of its premium devices will be getting the update. Sony promised that Lollipop would be released in a timely manner, but it seems the process isn’t speeding up, in spite of fans clamoring to get the new OS. Some are hoping that if Sony took so long to tweak the build they were given, it would be best if they waited a bit more and released Android 5.0.2 directly, skipping previous versions, to the Xperia Z2, Z2 Compact, Z3, Z3 Compact and even the Xperia Z and Z Ultra.
Many are saying that the first two build numbers of Android 5.0 Lollipop (namely 5.0 and 5.0.1) should be skipped entirely so that the Xperia Z2 and other handsets in line for the update would enjoy the most stable version. Having to deal with the bad reputation Android 5.0 Lollipop has created might be difficult for Google, especially since techies are getting impatient about the update. Maybe the staggered, stage by stage rollout wasn’t the best idea. Yet, you can’t roll out such a major update all at once, since servers would most likely crash under the high demand. If you’re not in the mood for waiting too long to get the update, you can install CyanogenMod 12 based on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop on your Xperia Z2.
Alas, at least we are happy that OEMs are working towards sending out the updates, and Sony is no exception. Our best bet for when the Xperia Z2 Android 5.0 Lollipop update will begin its slow rollout is the first week of February, as the window Sony promised is nearing its end. Most OEMs promised that updates would be released in 90 days counting from when they receive the official AOSP from Google. That being said, we should expect the update to hit the Xperia Z3 line first, after which it will most likely move to the Xperia Z2 line-up and so on. Since Sony promised that the entire Xperia Z line will be updated (Xperia Z, ZL, ZR, Tablet Z, Z1, Z1S, Z Ultra, Z1 Compact, Z2, Z2 Tablet, Z3, Z3v, Z3 Compact and Z3 Tablet Compact), and has already started updating GPe devices, we expect the rollout to be completed by March 2015. If you own a GPe Xperia Z2 or other Sony handset, have you received Android 5.0 Lollipop yet? Let us know how it’s working out for you and if you’ve encountered any problems during installation or with the UI.
