A round smart watch from Samsung might be in the works from the South Korean company who brought us the 3G-enabled Samsung Gear S. Round smart watches have taken hold of the wearable industry and people seem to be more attracted to their stylish design than the rectangle-shaped timepieces we have had so far. If we are indeed looking forward to a round smart watch from Samsung, the most likely release date for the wearable would have to be MWC 2015.
Even though we don’t have confirmation that a round smart watch from Samsung is indeed a reality, it seems like a likely development. With the success the Moto 360 and the LG G Watch R had in the past year, major OEMs must be clamoring to get their own designs out there and Samsung won’t be the one left behind. Patent filings reveal that the round smart watch from Samsung will be named the “Orbis”, which sounds like an appropriate name for it. We just hope Tizen won’t be on board, or if it will, we hope to see a vastly improved version of it.
The Orbis will most likely be part of the Gear line, having model number SM-R720 in the patent filing and will probably be as expensive as you can image. Since the Gear S equipped with 3G price is set above $500, we expect the Orbis to cost at least as much. It should come featuring much of the same features we’ve seen on Android Wear devices like the Moto 360 and LG G Watch R, as well as 3G or even LTE as seen on the Gear S. If precedent is anything to go by, we suppose Tizen will have to be a must on the Orbis if Samsung wants to separate its services from Android Wear.
Even though we weren’t expecting a round smart watch from Samsung, we would be really curious to see what kind of design the company is planning to implement and what new features we will find on the phone. Even though the release date for the Orbis remains unconfirmed, we are fairly sure that it will make an appearance at MWC 2015, the upcoming tech conference to be held in March 2015.
