PlayStation 4 Sales Reach 18.5 Million

The PlayStation 4 started strong out of the gate, outselling its competition. The system has been out for a year now, and seems to still be selling strong.

At this year’s Consumer Electronic Show, Sony announced that 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles have been sold so far. During the holidays alone Sony sold 4.1 million consoles worldwide. Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. had this to say: “We are absolutely delighted that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as their console of choice throughout this holiday season. We will continue to reinforce and deliver additional value on PS4 as the best place to play, by bringing even more exciting content and by enriching our wide array of service offerings.”

Along with the PlayStation 4 sales, Sony also released some other stats as well. Sony has stated that 10.9 million users are taking advantage of PS Plus. Sony is also doing good software wise as well; it is reported that the company has moved 81.8 million copies of software globally, through retail stores and digital download. 17.8 million of those copies were sold during the holidays.

Despite the great sales in terms of the PlayStation 4, Sony is still having their financial woes. The company posted a $1.2 billion loss in the fiscal second quarter of 2014 after its mobile division suffered. Things do not seem to be changing very soon. At the end of the fiscal year in March, the company expects an annual loss of around $2.1 billion.

Just recently, Sony had revealed subscription options for their upcoming PlayStation Now service. The options include a 1-month option and 3-month option. You can read about that here. There were no reports on how many Xbox One consoles Microsoft had sold during the holiday season. The console was marked down by $50, giving the company an edge against Sony.
