Some new Metal Gear Solid 5 images have been shared by Hideo Kojima’s twitter. Kojima has served as game director and major overseer of the Metal Gear Solid franchise since it’s inception in 1987. On Christmas Day in Japan Kojima hosted a video stream, which many expected to include information on Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain. Unfortunately the three hour live stream instead had Kojima discussing recent movies and other conversational topics with a woman wearing a chicken hat. Near the end Kojima finally did reveal something new about Metal Gear Solid 5, a chicken hat mechanic. The chicken hat is a wearable item that will be offered to players who consistently fail a mission as a way to ease the difficulty. The player will then have a Snake who is wearing a chicken hat that makes enemies easier to avoid by dulling their senses. The chicken hat also glows in the dark but enemies won’t notice. The chicken hat will additionally appear during cutscenes, much like the camouflage options in Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater carried over to cutscenes. It is a continuation of some goofy inclusions Kojima has always had in his games, beginning with the infamous Psycho Mantis boss fight in Metal Gear Solid where he would read your memory card for other Konami save data such as Castlevania. It will also accompany the classic cardboard box, an item that was missing in last year’s Metal Gear Solid 5 Ground Zeroes. The chicken hat reveal was mocked by some fans, although Kojima didn’t build up the livestream as having some grand announcement.
Two days later on twitter, Kojima shared some new Metal Gear Solid 5 images, showing off some new off-screen shots of the upcoming title. The first shows Snake riding a horse with a moon as the backdrop. Another shows Snake in the inside of a helicopter, a familiar sight to any who played Ground Zeroes. Third is a different view of said helicopter, this time from Snake’s back showing more of the inside. And lastly we have Snake wearing the chicken hat in what appears to be the familiar Afghanistan desert that has been shown off in gameplay demos. Each picture is shown from what appears to be a PC monitor with a promotional image for The Phantom Pain. These new Metal Gear Solid 5 images don’t show a whole lot of new stuff but does add some new material to what limited information we have on Metal Gear Solid 5. The game is rumored to be releasing summer of 2015, although there is no official word or solid basis for that information. Metal Gear Solid 5 Ground Zeroes released in March of 2014 and Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots released in June of 2008.
