LG offered us a truly impressive flagship this year, a flagship that’s even now still considered to be one of the best smartphones of 2014. That was no simple feat considering the large amount of excellent devices released since then, but now it’s time to look forward to the next big thing coming from the Korean tech giant, the LG G4. While the LG G3 is definitely a good phone, there’s always room for improvement and that’s what we’ll be look at today. It goes without saying that the next flagship has not been detailed just yet, so all we have at the moment are various leaks and rumors. As such, we’ll only be looking at what seems the most believable in order to figure out if the LG G4 will be a substantial upgrade over the LG G3, or if it will be just more of the same.
Display and Design
The LG G3 shipped with a display that effectively set a new standard for flagships and put a lot of other devices to shame. We’re talking about its beautiful QHD 5.5-inch panel with 1,440 x 2,560 resolution, 534 ppi, and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Can the LG G4 do any better? Rumor has it that the size will increase a bit up to around 5.7-inches with the same resolution, which should lead to a pixel density of only 515 ppi this time around. All in all, the display is expected to be nearly identical to the one on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, including the Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection. There are also rumors saying that the LG G4 will feature a bendable display, but take this with an extra grain of salt for now. In terms of design, the LG G4 is expected to stay overall similar to the LG G3, although it would be nice to see an actual aluminum chassis on the device, as opposed to one that only looks metallic.
Hardware and Software
Word on the street is that we will end up seeing various improvements when it comes to the hardware, with one of the most noticeable ones being the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor with Adreno 430 GPU. Other specs will likely include 3 or even 4 GB of RAM, 32GB/64GB internal storage memory options with microSD support, LG’s newly unveiled 20.7 MP camera with OIS on the back, and a 5 MP selfie snapper on the front. The LG G4 is also said to feature a large 3,500 mAh battery pack, although some say that it could go up to 4,000 mAh. All in all, we should be looking at hardware improvements across the board, but they will likely not make a huge difference as the LG G3 is already quite a powerhouse. As for the software, Android Lollipop 5.0 has already started rolling out for the LG G3 in certain markets and is expected to arrive to all the others in due time. The LG G4 however, will probably come with Android Lollipop 5.1 from the get-go.
Price and Release Date
The price tag is always a difficult subject to discuss when it comes to smartphones that haven’t been released yet. That said, the LG G3 started at $600 at launch, so we can expect the LG G4 to cost at least that amount, although we might end up looking at a bit more. Finally, the release date is expected to come earlier than usual next year as LG reportedly wants to get their flagship on the market a bit sooner this time around. As such, rumor has it that the LG G4 might be revealed next March and launch as soon as April. Both the LG G2 and the LG G3 were only announced in May, so this would definitely be a major change. But as it stands, upcoming rivals Samsung Galaxy S6 and the HTC One M9 are also expected to launch sooner than their predecessors, so LG would be wise to do the same with the LG G4.
Final Thoughts
All in all, we should indeed be looking at quite a few upgrades, but I don’t know if they could necessarily be called substantial. Truth is, the LG G3 is already an excellent flagship, so there are not a whole lot of major improvements they can do. The only way the LG G4 might end up being downright jaw-dropping is if the Korean tech giant equips it with some truly innovative features. Naturally, if such features are being planned, they’re likely kept under wraps until the company is ready to officially unveil the device. Long story short, don’t make any plans yet and wait until we learn more about the LG G4 before you decide to start saving up money to buy it. If you already own an LG G3, chances are that it won’t become outdated once its successor comes out, so just enjoy it for now and worry about an upgrade later.
