Etrian Odyssey and the Mystery Dungeon was just announced a few days ago along with the announcement of Etrian Odyssey V. Now details for the upcoming JRPG have been released.
A collaboration between Atlus and Spike Chunsoft, Etrian Odyssey and the Mystery Dungeon will be a roguelike dungeon-crawler. In the game, players create custom characters and assign them jobs and appearances. Different jobs give characters different abilities, which they will utilize as they explore dungeons. Dungeons will be randomly generated, and the goal is to reach the inner depths. Dungeons will grow bigger as players progress through the game.
In Etrian Odyssey and the Mystery Dungeon, only the leader of the party is controlled directly by the player. All other characters are left to their own devices as they attack and provide support. Like other Mystery Dungeon games, every time players take a turn to move on the map, attack, or perform some other type of action, enemies will also take a turn as well. Since dungeons are randomly generated, every floor will have different rooms for players to explore.
A collaboration between Atlus and Spike Chunsoft is not too surprising. Etrian Odyssey and the Mystery Dungeon is not the first Mystery Dungeon mash up that Spike Chunsoft has done. The most notable mash up that the company has done is the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series. The company has even worked on a Mystery Dungeon game featuring the Chocobo from the Final Fantasy series. All games in the series feature randomly generated dungeons and other roguelike features. They also include the chess like turn system, where players and enemies both take turns moving and attacking within the dungeon.
Etrian Odyssey and the Mystery Dungeon releases in Japan on March 5th, 2015. It will release for the 3DS. There is no release date outside of Japan at the moment, though Etrian Odyssey games do usually make it West.
