Earlier this month at Blizzcon 2014, Blizzard finally gave us a more detailed look at Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void. The company announced lots of changes for the upcoming game, as well as new units and features. While most SC2 fast were very excited to take a look at all the new additions, not everybody was entirely happy with them. As such, Game Balance Designer David Kim decided that it was a good idea to give us a quick update regarding the situation. First and foremost, Kim wanted to emphasize the fact that Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void is barely in its pre-alpha state, which means that the announced changes are not final yet.
Shortly after the Blizzcon announcement, a lot of Protoss players (myself included) have started to complain because their race was only getting one new unit while the Zerg and Terran were getting two. Kim addressed this by reiterating that nothing is final and that the Protoss might receive more than one unit when the final version of Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void comes out. Speaking of the Protoss, the balance designer is aware that many players are concerned that this race is mostly getting nerfs while the other two are seemingly only getting buffs. “We’ve seen concerns about Protoss being mostly ‘nerfed’,” Kim said in a recent Legacy of the Void update post. “Obviously we don’t want any race to get mostly ‘nerfs’ while other races are buffed, but because we’re trying so many things at once, balance will be off. Also, we’re aware that if we take away from the strength of the race as a whole, we’ll need to add something else back to make up for it since the balance of the game is pretty solid right now in Heart of the Swarm.”
Elsewhere, Kim talks a bit about the unit changes coming with Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void. The dev admits that the new HERC Terran unit might overlap with the Hellbat and says that Blizzard is working on addressing the issue. Also on the topic of unit changes, Kim wants to make sure that everyone understands that Carrier Interceptors are not free, as some were lead to believe. Interestingly, it seem that Blizzard is also thinking about implementing a new update system, or at least changing the current one by the time Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void arrives. According to Kim, the company is currently “exploring ways to make the upgrade process more interesting and dynamic.”
