Nintendo Reveals Transparent 2DS

Nintendo has announced a new transparent 2DS model that will be launching alongside Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire next Friday. The Nintendo 2DS is a more kid oriented portable system and a different model entirely when compared to the Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo is calling the new transparent 2DS Crystal Red and Crystal Blue, each with a price point of $99.99 MSRP. The transparent 2DS will also have a bundle with Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, however a price has yet to be announced.

Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are remakes of popular Pokemon games Ruby and Sapphire, originally released for the Game Boy Advance in March of 2003. The remakes utilize the same graphical style of the most recent Pokemon games, X and Y. Both Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will be releasing next Friday, November 21st, 2014 at the price of $39.99 each. Standard 2DS models cost $129.99 MSRP currently.

The transparent 2DS is not the first time that Nintendo has done clear plastic on their handhelds. Starting in 1998, the Game Boy received its first transparent model with the Atomic Purple color. In total, the Game Boy Color had fourteen transparent models when you include the special editions and Pokemon versions. The Game Boy Advance received its first transparent model with the Glacier color in 2001. The Game Boy Advance had five transparent models in total. The transparent 2DS model will be the first clear, transparent model since 2002.

The 2DS as a whole has been marketed more towards children than any other demographic, with Nintendo stating, “Kids will love the slick semi-transparent design,” However sales of the 2DS are combined with the 3DS so there is no solid way to gauge the consumer reaction to the standard 3DS SKU. The transparent 2DS will be compatible with all 3DS games including the recently released Super Smash Bros. Also of note is that the New 3DS that includes upgraded hardware and an NFC reader has yet to gain a North American release date. The New 3DS has been out in Japan since October 11.
