Bloodborne is an upcoming video game being developed by From Software and published by Sony Computer Entertainment exclusively for the PlayStation 4. It is being directed by Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki. The game was announced at Sony’s Electronic Entertainment Expo 2014 media briefing on June 9th, 2014, where a trailer was shown. The game is set for release in Japan on February 5th, 2015, and in North America and Europe on February 6th, 2015.
The game takes place in the gothic, ruined city of Yharnam which is rumoured to house a potent medical remedy. Over the years, many travellers make pilgrimages to the city seeking the remedy to cure their afflictions; the player takes the role as one of these travellers. Upon arriving in Yharnam, however, it is discovered that the city is plagued with an endemic illness that has malformed most of its denizens into bestial creatures. The player must navigate the streets of Yharnam and overcome its violently deranged inhabitants and horrifying monsters in order to survive.
Screenshots of the game were leaked on the internet weeks before the official reveal, under the title of Project Beast. Many believed at the time that the leak could be connected to Demon’s Souls. However, director Hidetaka Miyazaki has since stated that Bloodborne was never considered to be Demon’s Souls II, due to Sony Computer Entertainment wanting a new IP exclusively for the PlayStation 4. Miyazaki also stated he has always wanted to create a game set in the Victorian era, but felt that the video game consoles at the time were not powerful enough for what he envisioned. The game will be locked to 30 frames per second, with a resolution of 1080p.
