Bungie has reached the highest peaks with Destiny. Heavily criticized at times for its lack of story, but praised for its gameplay mechanics, Destiny is breaking record after record, as currently 9.5 million registered users are playing the game on Bungie servers. According to official publisher Activision, Destiny is the biggest new franchise in video game history and is currently ranked among the top ten largest video game launches of all time. Thanks to this massive success, developers have confirmed that Destiny will be getting a sequel, which is being set up as we speak. In the meantime, Bungie will release additional game expansions starting with The Dark Below, due this December 9th.
“Work has also begun on future expansion packs as well as on our next full game release,” Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg stated during the Activision Blizzard earnings call. “We’re very pleased with the launch and continuing engagement,” he followed. Apparently, this year’s third quarter was the most lucrative one in Activision’s history, as the company took in $753 million in revenue, topping the $691 million the publisher earned last year around the same period. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick says this was accomplished thanks to Destiny’s huge success. Another successful title in the publisher’s resume is Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare which is the most pre-ordered title in Activision’s long list of published games.
Bungie has already announced that Destiny will be a trilogy title and hopefully this sequel will manage to right the wrongs of the first release. Until then, the upcoming Dark Below expansion might be able to increase the game’s appeal by introducing new story missions, gear, and gameplay modes. Currently, Destiny players are averaging 3 hours of daily play which is truly impressive, and the thought that this number might go up is pretty frightening. We will be getting more details on Destiny 2 by the end of this year.
