Trine series sells over 7 million, releases editing tools for maps

Independent developer Frozenbyte has announced the Trine series has officially sold over seven million (!) copies. To celebrate this latest achievement, the developer has released an editor tool for both Trine: Enhanced Edition and Trine 2: Complete Story, which allows gamers to edit existing maps, in addition to building from ground-up brand-new ones. Even better – everything created can be shared with others via the Steam Workshop. “We’ve reached a higher user-base than we ever thought possible, but now we hope that people who’ve yet to play the Trine games will give them a shot during the Free Weekend on Steam”, said Frozenbyte CEO Lauri Hyvärinen. “Opening up the games to user generated content is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time, and we’re thrilled to see what people can come up with using the Editors”.

Trine is a 2.5D side-scrolling action/adventure platformer, which was originally released back in 2009. Since then, the game has been available on eight different platform including the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC, Mac, Linux, and Android. Players control and switch between three different characters (a thief, a knight, and a wizard), in order to complete various levels. There is also a cooperative play feature, whereby multiple players can join in at any time to control different characters, simultaneously. A remake of Trine called Trine: Enchanted Edition, using Trine 2’s engine and with online multiplayer, was released on July 24th, 2014.

On the other hand, Trine 2 came out back in 2011, with a patch released on June 6th, 2013 upgrading it to the Trine 2: Complete Story edition, if the Goblin Menace expansion had been previously purchased. This new edition includes the Dwarven Caverns level previously available only in the Director’s Cut version from the Wii U. A cross-platform and DRM-free release of Trine 2: Complete Story was then later made available as part of Humble Indie Bundle 9.
