Frank O’Connor, 343 Industries franchise development director, addressed Halo fans’ concerns regarding the protagonist of the upcoming installment, Halo 5: Guardians, ending all speculations.
After a statement given by actor Mike Colter in an interview with X-One magazine, certain reports surfaced stating that his character, Agent Locke will be the main character in Halo 5: Guardians. O’ Connor stepped in and denied the rumors, assuring fans that Master Chief remains the protagonist of the game, while Agent Locke will be a primary character in the story. He also made it clear that 343 Industries doesn’t intend to retire series veteran Master Chief any time soon.
Agent Locke also appears in the five episodes of the web series “Halo: Nightfall”, which is produced by Ridley Scott and is set between Halo 4 and Halo 5, tying the two games together. In addition to this, Colter’s statement reveals that his character will be playable and that Agent Locke, in addition to being a primary character will also be a Spartan IV by the time the events of Halo 5 begin. These facts alone were enough to start speculations and many people thought that Master Chief’s days were numbered. It turns out that they shouldn’t have worried so much, since 343 Industries decided not to renounce their veteran protagonist.
Halo 5 is an upcoming first person shooter, developed by 343 Industries and published by Microsoft Studios. According to the developers, the game is supposed to be released by the end of next year, exclusively on the Xbox One console. Before the full game is released, players will be able to get a glimpse of the next Halo game by purchasing The Master Chief Collection, which, in addition to all the Halo games released so far, including remastered versions of the first two games, gives them access to Halo 5’s multiplayer beta. The beta begins on December 29, 2014, and runs for three weeks.
