Amazon now officially owns Twitch

Twitch was initially meant to be purchased by Youtube, or so the story went. This rumor was dispelled last month however as Amazon announced its plans of acquiring the streaming platform. A listing on SEC reveals that the deal is now finalized and Amazon is the proud owner of Twitch. The retailer giant had to pay $970 million in order to make this happen, but it was well worth it as Twitch is the most popular video game streaming website around. Just to put things into perspective, Microsoft paid no less than $2.5 billion to acquire Mojang, the developers of Minecraft. In any case, the deal will certainly prove to be beneficial for both parties and although it’s easy to see why Amazon might be happy about it, Twitch is welcoming the partnership as well.

“Today, I’m pleased to announce we’ve been acquired by Amazon,” said Twitch CEO Emmett Shear last month. “We chose Amazon because they believe in our community, they share our values and long-term vision, and they want to help us get there faster. We’re keeping most everything the same: our office, our employees, our brand, and most importantly our independence. But with Amazon’s support we’ll have the resources to bring you an even better Twitch. I personally want to thank you, each and every member of the Twitch community, for what you’ve created. Thank you for putting your faith in us. Thank you for sticking with us through growing pains and stumbles. Thank you for bringing your very best to us and sharing it with the world. Thank you, from a group of gamers who never dreamed they’d get to help shape the face of the industry that we love so much.”

It’s hard to say what the future will hold for Twitch now that it was acquired by Amazon, but we hope that the retailer doesn’t plan to change things too much. Twitch is the number one place to view gaming related content so we’re keeping our fingers crossed that it will stay that way. Stay tuned for all the latest news and updates.
