There are people standing in line to get an iPhone 6 Plus in Australia and the U.S. as we speak and even more people waiting on their iPhone 6 Plus pre-orders to arrive at their doors, the first ones probably getting their units by the end of Friday. For these people, the deed has been done and if you’ve already stood four hours in line to buy the iPhone 6 Plus, keep your place in the queue, this article is not for you.
For those of you are still wondering whether they should get the iPhone 6 Plus phablet smartphone from Apple, this article is staring back at you. I’m sure that those of you who chose to wait a bit longer to get the iPhone 6 Plus are looking up alternatives and reading reviews to see whether the iPhone 6 Plus would be a good fit for them. And that’s the right thing to do, instead of impulse shopping, buying the newest thing without doing any research.
IF you’re like me, and are still wondering which of the thousands of phablets out there you should buy for yourself as a present, you should consider the OnePlus One. If you haven’t heard about this “flagship killer” as it has been dubbed by many, the most important thing you should know that it will be available for pre-order for a limited time only at the end of October. The OnePlus One will set you back $300 for the 16 GB version, and $350 for the 64 GB version, whilst the iPhone 6 Plus is $750 for the 16 GB version, $850 for the 64 GB version and $950 for the 128 GB version. If you’re on a budget but still want a great phone, you can already stop reading if you’re in a rush. Just saying.
The main difference that we should get out of the way when it comes to the OnePlus One and the iPhone 6 Plus is OS. The iPhone 6 Plus runs on Apple’s latest iOS 8, which has been heavily tweaked with new features and functions, long overdue according to many iOS users. The OnePlus One runs on Android KitKat, overlaid with CyanogenMod 11s, a ROM designed specifically for the OnePlus One. CyanogenMod 11s is infinitely customizable and many have praised this feature in the ROM.
The iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5 inch Retina display with 1080p resolution and 401 ppi protected by an oleophobic coating and shatter proof glass, Touch ID, 1 GB RAM, Apple’s new dual core A8 CPU and PowerVR GX6650 GPU with either 16, or 64 or 128 GB storage space, with no microSD card slot. The OnePlus One has the same 5.5 inch 1080p screen protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, 3 GB RAM, quad core Snapdragon 801 CPU, Adreno 330 GPU and once again, no microSD slot.
The camera on the OnePlus One is superior to the iPhone 6 Plus 8 MP iSight rear camera and 1.2 MP front shooter, with its 13 MP rear camera and 5 MP selfie camera. The iPhone 6 Plus camera does have optical image stabilization which is not present on the OnePlus One, but otherwise, you can take awesome pictures with the OnePlus One. Thus, we can safely say that both in camera specifications and processing power, the OnePlus One is better than the iPhone 6 Plus.
The iPhone 6 Plus has a 2915 mAH battery, whilst the OnePlus One gets its juice from a bigger 3100 mAH battery. The OnePlus Plus and iPhone 6 Plus are both NFC enabled, but you can only use this feature for Apple Pay on the iPhone 6 Plus at the moment. A fingerprint sensor has not been included in the OnePlus One, but you can find it, as usual, on the iPhone 6 Plus.
Design-wise, both the iPhone 6 Plus and OnePlus One have premium quality builds and are designed to be light and slim devices that are supposed to be easily maneuverable. You’ve got three color options for the iPhone 6 Plus, whilst the OnePlus One is only available in black and white with a few swappable back-covers available. 
In my mind, the winner of this comparison is clear, but I won’t declare one. I honestly believe that an objective comparison doesn’t necessarily have to bring forth a winner. I am a little biased towards the OnePlus One, I admit, but that’s because I love its design much more than I do that of the iPhone 6 Plus. I also appreciate that OnePlus offers a highly affordable high-end smartphone, even though it’s only available in limited numbers. That’s understandable, since OnePlus is just a startup company, but they are headed the right direction.
As a conclusion, I would say that both the iPhone 6 Plus and OnePlus One have excellent, high-end specs to boast with, it remains up to you to decide which one is worth your money and how much of your money. I’m eager to see pre-orders open up for the OnePlus One in October, because I’m definitely buying one. You can already get your hands on the iPhone 6 Plus in many places, but be aware of the fact that the handset is still in short supply, so if the iPhone 6 Plus is your flagship of choice, you better hurry.
