Philips announces pain-relieving tech

Philips has decided to get in on the health craze that has been going on within the world of technology and announced two new products it will be selling by the end of this month. The two Philips devices are aimed at people who are suffering from pain and will pair with iPhones and iPads to control the treatments these devices offer.

Philips will use TENS-technology in its new PulseRelief gadget, TENS-technology standing for Transcutaneous  Electronic Nerve Stimulation. The Philips PulseRelief will stimulate the nerves with electric pulses around the designated area on your body in order to prevent pain signals from reaching your brain. It will also stimulate the production of endorphin, the feel-good chemical which makes your brain tell you you’re feeling great. The Philips PulseRelief will be paired to an iOS device application which will let its users choose treatment intensity. Users will be able to choose from 60 different intensity-levels, which is a unique feature to Philips design.

The Philips PulseRelief is targeted at patients suffering from musculoskeletal pain, which is usually a chronic affliction. The BlueTouch is the other device Philips will be launching alongside the Philips PulseRelief and this one doesn’t bring much novelty to the medical gadget field. Philips BlueTouch uses blue LED lights that shine onto your skin, which is believed by many to have therapeutic effects on muscular back pain. The theory behind blue LED lights is that the light triggers the production of Nitric Oxide, which at its turn increases blood flow and facilitates the body’s self-healing process.

There have been people voicing doubts about the blue LED technology which wuld affect the Philips BlueTouch health gadget as well, but there still remain many patients who reinforce that the technology actually works. The Philips Blue Touch differs from other blued LED light using technology out there because it allows patients to select their own treatments via the same iOS application used with the PulseRelief.

Philips plans on releasing the two medical gadgets by the end of the months in stores and by November online. We don’t know whether these gadgets will catch on, but most people advice people considering buying them to have a chat with their doctors first, to see if these treatments would actually be useful for their respective conditions and afflictions. We’ve no information on the price of these gadgets, so far, but we expect them to be around $170-$250.

These Philips devices will probably work with Apple’s HealthKit at a given point, although there hasn’t been any confirmation on that. Nonetheless, the devices are iOS exclusive as far as we know so we might see a HealthKit implementation soon. If these devices would be featured within HealthKit, it would possibly lead to a partnership between Philips and Apple and would suggest further partnerships with wearable medical device manufacturers.
