Oculus Rift, the VR headset developed by the titular company and bought by Facebook, will be affordable for the consumers. The product, according to Oculus, is going to be cheap and user friendly.
Oculus VR co-founder Nate Mitchell announced that Rift could be priced somewhere between $200-$400. The company wants their device to be as cheap as possible. For now, they’re doing it right. The price they announced is no higher than what you would have to pay for a gaming console. Oculus, who was bought by Facebook for $2 billion, are working hard on their headset. They are improving its aestethic and functional design. Mitchell states that they want to raise the refresh rate from 75 to 90 Hz or higher and to reduce the size and weight of the Oculus Rift.
The consumer edition of Oculus Rift doesn’t have a release date yet. The company is confident in their product, considering that they sold over 100.000 units of the Development Kits 1 and 2. Furthermore, as I stated in a previous article, they are also working with Samsung at their Gear VR, another virtual reality headset powered by the Galaxy Note 4 phablet.
Currently, the Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 can be purchased from the company’s website for $350. This headset, as stated in its name, is intended for developers and not for the general public. It comes with a low-persistence OLED display that eliminates motion blur and low-latency positional head tracking. It also has a high-definition 960×1080 per-eye display, which reduces the screen-door effect and improves clarity, color and contrast. Development Kit 2 was released in March 2014, a year after the first one. The developers state that, while Developer Kit 2 isn’t identical to the consumer edition of Rift, all the content developed through it will work on the edition intended for the public.
