Square Enix will publish Dontnod’s “Life is Strange” adventure game

Square Enix announced on their website that they will publish French developer Dontnod’s new game, “Life is Strange”. The developer states that this will be a narrative-driven game, in which the story is influenced by the player’s choices. The game will be released episodically, with each new chapter building and evolving based on the before-mentioned choices. This style is similar to Telltale’s more famous “The Walking Dead” and “A Wolf Among Us” series, where players’ choices also mattered for the story to unfold.

The plot features a woman named Max Caufield, who returns to Oregon after having been away for five years. She teams up with an old friend in order to find a woman who had disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Furthermore, Max discovers that she has an unusual ability: the power to rewind time.

Time travel is given a deeper meaning in this game compared to other releases that have made use of this technique. Square Enix reveals that every action the player takes in this game enacts a butterfly effect (meaning that whatever you change in the past has long term effects in the future). “Life is Strange” will be released on PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. The date this game will come out at is yet unknown. However, the developer has brought a demo to Gamescom:

It remains to be seen how successful “Life is Strange” will be, considering that developer Dontnod Entertainment has only one more game in their portfolio: “Remember Me”. Released in June 2013 for PC, PS3 and XBOX 360, “Remember Me” also featured a female heroine named Nilin. She is a memory hunter whose memories were stolen by a company named Memorize. At first, most publishers avoided this game because they didn’t believe in the success of a female lead. Originally, this game was supposed to be a PS3 exclusive named “Adrift”, but, after its cancellation, Capcom bought it and the final result was “Remember Me”. The game received mixed reviews, most of them noting that it had potential but it wasn’t very well executed.

About Crisan Mircea

I'm a journalism graduate and an occasional gamer. As a kid I used to own a NES clone called "Terminator 2", which was hugely popular in my country. I like old school games and adventure games but I occasionaly play RPG's and Shooters as well, though I wouldn't call myself an expert at these kinds of games. When I'm not writing or playing games I prefer reading detective or fantasy novels.
