We suspected for a while that Android L will be made available for the Moto X, but now we also have confirmation. Motorola’s Vice President Punit Soni chose not to make a big fuss about it, and instead just broke the news quietly on Google+. He didn’t make an announcement on his profile page but gave a straight and simple answer to a user who goes by the name of Josh B. The question was “Moto X is still going to get Android L (5.0) right?” and the answer was “Yup”. Simplicity at its finest. Props to mister Soni for the short and sweet answer, and also for interacting personally with the community. Josh himself was also pretty impressed by this it seems. “Holy s**t, someone THAT important replied to one of my posts… God damn…Well, thanks for the answer!”
The Moto X along with a couple of other Moto handsets have always been fortunate enough to be among the first devices to receive the latest updates shortly after release. This was the case with Android 4.4.4 KitKat and Android 4.4.3 before that, and Android L will also follow this trend it seems. At the moment, the latest version of the operating system is only available as a developer preview for the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2013). However, a team of developers have also managed to have it run on the Nexus 4 and HTC One M7 with other devices likely to follow at some point. But the final build will only be available later this year and we’re not sure which of the big companies will get to upgrade. We know that Google’s Nexus devices will be the first, just as the always are, and next in line seems to be Motorola with the Moto X presumably being their first handset to run it.
HTC and OnePlus have also expressed their interest in upgrading their flagships to Android L in the future. Both companies said they will upgrade within three months of receiving the final build from Google. “We are committed to updating our flagship HTC One family as fast as possible as part of our HTC Advantage program. We will begin rolling out updates to the HTC One (M8) and HTC One (M7) worldwide within 90 days of receiving final software from Google, followed shortly thereafter by other One family members and select devices, ” HTC said earlier this year. OnePlus also made a very similar statement last month.
