Leaked images show the Android TV controller

Images purported to show the controller for the recently announced Android TV have leaked. Artem Russakovskii, who attended the Google I/O conference last week, allegedly took a photo of the controller. He also claims that he was told the controller will be bundled with Android TV set top boxes, allowing users to play games using traditional controls. Meanwhile a Reddit user also found a render that looks exactly the same as the leaked photo, seemingly confirming that it is genuine. At first glance, the controller appears to look very similar to its Xbox One counterpart, featuring a similar button layout along with shoulder pads and triggers. The Android version though features symmetrical analog sticks similar to the design used for the PlayStation 4 DualShock pad and the Wii U controller.

Android TV is a new service from Google that operates in much the same way as Apple TV. It acts as an entertainment hub to allow users to watch movies and TV as well as play video games. It replaces the unpopular Google TV, which did not include apps or games as part of its service. Although it can be operated using a smartphone or tablet, Android TV was revealed to make use of a specialized controller. As with its predecessor it can also be navigated using voice commands. Android TV also lets users stream content directly from their other Android devices to any television running the service.

Android TV will launch later this year. It will come built into certain smart televisions or be available as a set top box. It will be directly competing with other devices such as Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV as well as home consoles such as the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Razer has also announced that it will be bringing out its own version of the Android TV set top box that will focus specifically on gaming. There hasn’t been any word as to whether this will use the standard controller or come with its own individual design.
