While pretty much everyone was talking about Far Cry 4’s colorful, maniacal villain from the brilliant E3 reveal, we had few details on who we would actually be playing as. Yesterday Ubisoft tweeted an image of the protagonist, whose name is Ajay Ghale, who they describe as “Kyrat native, devoted son, and Pagan Min’s guest of honor.”

Kyrat is the fictional Himalayan region in Far Cry 4, and Pagan Min, of course, is the disturbingly charming self-imposed dictator and King of the land. For their Far Cry 4 cover story, Gameinformer sat down with Ubisoft Montreal as they provided some much needed background on the characters and their stories. Early in Min’s merciless rule, a man named Mohan Ghale-Ajay’s father- led a rebellion against the lunatic ruler, not only for freedom, but the two also battled for the affections of a woman named Ishwari. This fighting leads to Mohan’s death, and Ishwari flees Kyrat, while Min locked himself in his palace, leaving the region under the rule of his insane governors.
So what do you have to do with any of this? As Ajay returns to Kyrat after many years to spread his mother’s ashes, he runs into Pagan, who is more than a little interested in him. “Pagan has lots to reveal about your mother,” Far Cry 4 narrative director Mark Thompson explained. “Pagan has a personal connection to you that you don’t understand, and he uses that as a weapon against you. He’s fun and charming, but also terrifying – evil, but weirdly friendly. He can come talk to you very matter-of-factly while everyone around you is being murdered. Your whole world is falling apart, but for him it’s 11 o’clock on a Tuesday.”
Clearly Pagan Min is unhinged, but if there is anything Far Cry does right, it’s unhinged. The most recent installment in the franchise, Far Cry 3, placed players face to face with Vaas, the psychopathic pirate leader, who quickly became the highlight of the game. These psychotic villains are becoming somewhat of a staple in the Far Cry series, and as Ajay Ghale, you are sure to have a difficult challenge ahead of you.
Far Cry 4 releases November 18th for the Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
