Sony announced that Planetside 2 will finally arrive for the PS4 sometime this year. The game is a free-to-play MMO shooter, which features battles that take place on a truly massive scale. Planetside 2 was initially released for the PC back in November 2012 and has gathered quite a solid fan base since then. As you might imagine, the PS4 version of the game will be somewhat different than the PC one. There are always challenges when bringing a popular title from one platform to another and this is also true in the case of Planetside 2. Senior art director Tramell Isaac recently spoke with International Business Times about these challenges and some of the other aspects that need to be taken into consideration for this version of the game.
“One of the main changes with the PS4 is the [user interface]. The UI is a little different, more console-centric. We spent a lot of time making sure it feels like a console game, as opposed to a PC game,” Isaac told IBTimes. “The bulk of our focus is making sure it feels like a console game from start to finish.” He also said that we should’t expect cross-platform support from the upcoming title. “Planetside 2 allows thousands of people to play on single maps in its current PC version,” Isaac explained. “But when the game shifts to the PS4, there will be no cross-platform play.”
The art director also made quite an interesting reveal during the discussions. Normally we expect PC titles to look better than their console counterparts considering that a lot of the times computers feature superior hardware. However, this will not be the case for Planetside 2 according to Tramell Isaac who says the PS4 version will have better graphics. “If anyone’s playing on the PC, they can expect the PlayStation version to look much better than the PC version does,” he mentioned.
Planetside 2 features open-world battles of up to 2.000 players at once, and also includes air and land vehicles. We’re curious to see how this will translate on the PS4 version and if the platform can manage such a huge amount of players. It was announced earlier that year that the game will run in 1080p resolution and targets 60 fps. It was indeed running on that framerate at E3, but we’ll have to wait and see if it can also do it when there are 2.000 people on the map. Stay tuned for more news and updates.
