For a limited time, Epson is offering the refurbished MegaPlex MG-50 3LCD projector for $239 (Original price: $699.99). The MegaPlex MG-50 is a self-contained home theater, offering 2x 10W built-in speakers, a carrying handle for easy transport from one room to another. As the junior model in Epson’s MegaPlex projector line, the Epson MegaPlex MG-50 has lower resolution and brightness than the MegaPlex MG-850HD but is nearly identical otherwise.
The MG-50 is black, with rounded corners and a swept-back rear, which houses the iPhone 30-pin dock and the speaker system. Besides letting you display content from your Apple device, the dock also quickly charges it. At the lens, we have a focus and zoom ring, and a slider for keystone correction. In addition to the i-thing dock, the MegaPlex MG-50 includes HDMI, composite and component video ports, housed behind a protective door on the projector’s side. By connecting one of those devices, you can project any videos you’ve purchased from iTunes. It also works with Netflix and YouTube, though unfortunately most other streaming apps (Hulu, HBO Go, etc.) don’t support this kind of video-out. With the VGA and HDMI inputs, you can connect any other source (DVD player, Android device, laptop, PC, etc.).
The MG-50 has a rated brightness of 2,200 lumens, and a 540p (960 by 540) native resolution and it shares the MG-850HD’s 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, though that projector has a higher (720p) native resolution. Its light engine is based on 3LCD technology, which was developed by Epson and employs 3 LCD panels, each of which processes light of a different primary color.
Use your device’s touchscreen or the projector remote control to easily access various functions. Though it can’t match the MG-850HD’s image quality, the MegaPlex MG-50 presents a good, lower-budget alternative. Besides the huge discount, Epson provides free shipping too (probably just in USA).
