The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is the most rumored and one of the most expected smartphones of 2014. Not much is known about this device, but considering the success its predecessors had, we’re certain the Note 4 will be an outstanding phone. On the other hand, the Sony Xperia Z2 is a highly appreciated phone. Ever since its release, the Z2 proved to be the “Xperia reinvented”, and although it’s quite similar to the Z1, Sony added some upgrades to their newest smartphone in order to win the flagship race.
Design and Build
It’s rumored that the Note 4 will have a 5.7-inch screen, as the Note 2 came with a 5.5-inch and the Note 3 with a 5.7-inch display, it’s only an assumption Samsung won’t push things too far with a 5.9-inch display, following the logic. A report claimed Samsung might ditch the Super AMOLED display for a new technology, namely the PLS LCD, that would apparently cut costs up to 20%. As unwanted a bendable display might be, there are rumors that claim the Galaxy Note 4 will feature something similar. Apparently the device will have very curved edges so there would be no visible bezel, rather than an actual bendable display like the one on the Galaxy Round. Another possible feature is a three-sided screen that could be used to read texts, for instance, or it could host on-screen buttons or apps for easier access. In what concerns the resolution, not much is certain. It’s been rumored the Note 4 could have 2560 x 1440 with a pixel density of 500 PPI.
The Xperia Z2 is very similar to its predecessor, the Z1, slim, with a one-piece aluminum frame and a glass panel, the Xperia branding on the back, the camera lens in the top-left corner and a big power button on the right edge. The device measures 146.8×73.3×8.2 mm and weighs 163 grams, larger than its predecessor, featuring a Triluminos 5.2-inch IPS LCD display, with a 1080×1920 resolution meaning a 424 ppi pixel density. The display comes with multi-touch (up to ten fingers), scratch resistant glass and Sony’s own X-Reality Engine.
Hardware and Software
Some rumors claim the Galaxy Note 4 will have a 3.500 mAh battery, a Snapdragon 805 SoC with CAT6 capabilities and a speed of 2.4GHz helped along with 3GB of RAM (or 4GB, according to some recent suspicions), a Wacom digitizer and the well known S-Pen Stylus. Regarding the software, the Note 4 might run Android 4.4.2 KitKat. Probably the most interesting feature the Note 4 is expected to have is the IP 67 rating, meaning a water and dust proof device.
The Xperia Z2 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC , four Krait 400 cores clocked at 2.3GHz CPU. The device comes with an Adreno 330 GPU (just like the Z1), 3GB RAM, 16GB internal memory storage, it also allows users to expand the storage to 128GB with a microSD card slot (water and dust proof) and a 3,200 mAh battery. Regarding the software, the Z2 runs Android 4.4 KitKat, as the Z1. Regarding connectivity, there are several options including 4G LTE, HSPA+, Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi hotspot functionality, DLNA, GPS with A-GPS, Bluetooth v4.0, NFC, FM radio with RDS, and a 3.5mm audio jack.
Camera
Is expected the Note 4 to have the best camera phone camera, as the Note 3 has a 13 megapixels camera and the S5 a 16 megapixels camera, it’s assumed the camera on the Note 4 to have up to 21 megapixels ISOSCEL rear camera. Samsung is already preparing to release a 20 MP sensor in the second half of this year, the same time the Galaxy Note 4 will be launched at the IFA in Berlin. Coincidence? Maybe.
The Z2 features a 20.7 megapixel camera with support for 4K recordings, with a 3840×2160 resolution for full HD details, STM10 Stereo Microphone for great stereo recordings, with ½.3 Exmor RS for mobile CMOS image sensor, G lens and BIONZ, and a 2.2-megapixel front facing camera capable to record videos at 1080p.
It’s not easy to compare a not yet released smartphone with an existing one, but considering we’re talking about the Note 4, we can only expect for the best quality regarding hardware and software from Samsung. If the rumors are true, the Note 4 will be a hard to compete with device. A better battery, probably a bigger and better screen compared to the Xperia Z2 and better OS. But as nothing is yet certain, we’ll have to wait and see if the future Samsung flagship will actually a worthy competitor to current flagships as the Xperia Z1.
