The Finnish company has suspended sales for the Lumia 2520 tablet a few days ago. Nokia claims that they took the decision after it was discovered that the tablet’s AC-300 charger may cause an electric shock when touched. The company stopped shipping Lumia 2520’s for the following countries: Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Russia, Switzerland and the UK. Owners are “strongly advised to suspend use of the AC-300 charger until further notice.”
Nokia explains that “Under certain conditions, the plastic cover of the charger’s exchangeable plug could come loose and separate. If loose and separated, certain internal components may cause an electric shock if touched while the plug remains in the live socket”. It seems that approximately 30.000 sold chargers are affected, including about 600 sold in the US. In any case, the company claims that there have been no reported incidents.“While there have been no confirmed consumer incidents related to this potential quality issue, product quality and safety are top priorities at Nokia”.
Retailers in the United States are still selling Lumia 2520 tablets but travel chargers are no longer available. Nokia also urges people in the US and the aforementioned countries to suspend the use of the travel charger accessory until further notice. Unfortunately, if you were thinking of using other Nokia chargers you’re out of luck. “The AC-300 charger for the Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet features an exclusive design that differs from other Nokia chargers” the company says.
Although the tablet is not affected in any way, the Lumia 2520 is practically useless now considering that no other chargers can be used. No warnings about the use of the device itself have been given and it appears that the faulty chargers did not cause any harm to the tablet. In a FAQ posted online, Nokia states that they are urgently working to resolve the problem and advises affected users to check the page for updates.
“Will Nokia be making any kind of amends to the owners of its devices who are unable to use those devices because they couldn’t be charged while waiting for replacement chargers?”
“We apologize to the owners of the Lumia 2520, and we are working with urgency to minimize the inconvenience. Consumers wanting more information and updates are encouraged to check this page for updates.”
